Focal Therapies

As the extreme opposite of cryosurgery, focal therapies, such as high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) and high-energy frequency ablation, externally direct energy to the prostate, causing tissue damage and death to the cancerous cells. The idea is that surgeons can deliver a more targeted approach compared to radical prostatectomy, thereby minimizing the chance of sexual side effects. While conceptually it’s attractive to think that the field is exploring ways of delivering treatments that are more targeted, I think we have to still carefully evaluate the potential that we are trading off undertreating patients. This procedure may risk leaving cancerous cells behind.
